Denys King

LMFT,  RESIDENT

Hi! I’m Denys King, a Resident in Marriage and Family Therapy,  based in Northern Virginia, where I live with my husband and our four children. Over the years, my personal and professional experiences have shaped my deep understanding of the joys and challenges within ourselves, relationships, marriage, and family life. I am passionate about helping clients navigate these complexities, finding fulfillment in their most meaningful connections.

Family Therapy Approach
In my practice, I take a systems-based approach, focusing on healing and strengthening relationships. I believe that you, the client, are the expert in your own life. My role is to walk alongside you, offering humble and empathetic guidance as we work together toward practical solutions that foster joy and positive change. I help clients tap into their own insights to create meaningful change, using evidence-based techniques, active listening, and collaborative support.

As someone enriched by diverse cultural experiences, including living abroad, I deeply value the unique perspectives that each client brings. I approach therapy through a culturally sensitive, inclusive, and affirming lens, recognizing that our differences are strengths. Whether you are navigating the world as a part of a culturally diverse background, as a neurodivergent individual, or as someone within the LGBTQIA+ community, I am here to support you in shaping your own story.

Child and Adolescent Approach
When children experience big emotions, it can feel overwhelming for both them and their parents. I work with parents and caregivers to help children better understand their emotions and create a safe space for them to explore self-regulation. By using a child-centered play-based approach, I aim to give kids the freedom to explore who they are, their environment and start feeling more comfortable with themselves.

When working with teens, I take a person-centered and systemic approach that supports their journey toward individuation and self-discovery. Adolescence is a critical time for exploring identity, autonomy, and relationships. I provide a supportive space where teens can safely navigate these challenges, understand their strengths, and develop a clearer sense of who they are as they grow into adulthood.

Parent Consultation
When working with parents, I value rethinking and examining traditional approaches to cultivate a home environment that respects each family member while enhancing the entire family system. I aim to foster a space where every voice is heard, and each individual feels seen and valued.

My Philosophy
Even when working one-on-one, I emphasize the importance of relationships in shaping who you are. By exploring these connections, we can shift perspectives and unlock solutions that lead to meaningful change. You often hold the answers, and I am here to support and guide you toward those solutions, helping you to be the narrator of your own story.

In our work together, you'll find:

  • A compassionate listener who truly hears your concerns

  • Practical, tailored solutions for your unique family dynamics

  • Support in managing the big emotions that come with parenting and relationships
