Is your child’s mood or behavior getting in the way of them leading a happy life? Are you feeling ready to seek help?
We offer many types of therapies for children, depending on the needs of your child. With your permission, our clinicians are happy to collaborate with other treatment professionals as needed, including physicians, psychiatrists, school counselors, teachers, and occupational/physical/speech therapists.
A younger child may be best suited for play or expressive therapies, and many of our clinicians are trained play therapists. Play therapy is to young children what talk therapy is to adults - it is often called the "language" of children. Play offers children an opportunity to normalize and play out any thoughts and feelings they are unable to express verbally; using toys instead of words..For more on the power of play, click below to see a video of the adorable Andrew!
Older children may want to process their feelings by connecting their thoughts to their feelings and behaviors (otherwise known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – CBT for short). At our practice, we use CBT in a way that is adapted to be neurodiversity affirming, as some individuals may have a difficult time with self-reflection, which CBT often requires.
Several of us are trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which you can learn more about here. We also adapt EMDR for neurodiverse populations. Did you see that Prince Harry used EMDR to process trauma?
Our therapists help kids with emotional ups and downs, disruptive behaviors getting them in trouble at home or at school, anxiety, depression, attachment, parent-child relationship concerns, problem sexual behaviors, recovery from traumatic experiences, processing grief and loss, self-harming behaviors, and school refusal or other school-related difficulties. We are always learning more and trying to be better at what we do, too! Email any of us to ask about our latest training we attended.
We offer the following treatment approaches with children:
-
Play Therapy is to kids what talk therapy is to adults -it is often called “the language” of children. Play Therapy offers children an opportunity to normalize and play out any thoughts and feelings they might be having that they are unable to express verbally; using toys instead of words.
-
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy used to connect thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; this modality is adapted by our clinicians to ensure it is utilized to be affirming to all clients
-
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) - a type of therapy used to assist with regulating intense emotions and finding alternate and effective ways to cope
-
Expressive Therapies - expressive therapies include art, santray, music, and movement therapies, which allow children the opportunity to non-verbally express their emotions and experiences. These therapies give children a sense of control over their situations and can enhance and speed the healing process.
-
Humanistic Therapy: In humanistic therapy, older kids focus on growing, understanding themselves better, and accepting who they are. They can explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a safe and supportive place without being judged. This kind of therapy helps them feel more independent and good about themselves.
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT helps older kids become more flexible in how they handle tough feelings and thoughts. They learn to accept these emotions and commit to actions that line up with their values. ACT also teaches them to be more mindful and make choices based on what's important to them.
-
Autplay: Autplay is a special kind of therapy for kids with autism. It uses play to help them with emotions, social skills, and how their senses work. Each child gets personalized play activities that suit their needs.
