Amanda Van Emburgh Family and Child Therapy Vienna, VA

Amanda Van Emburgh

PSY.D., RPT-S, PRACTICE OWNER

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Registered Play Therapist – Supervisor (RPT-S)* and specialize in treating those who have experienced trauma, grief, and loss, parents of children who have special needs, neurodivergent young people, and those transitioning to college or taking time off after high school. I hold a certification in Trauma Informed Clinical Practice, and have advanced training in play and expressive therapies. I am also an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Certified therapist.

I offer parenting consultation to those looking to strengthen attachment and relationships with their children. I offer expertise in parenting strategies for spirited, high-needs children.

I provide clients specific strategies that are tailored to clients’ particular situation and their background, and strive to meet them where they are in life. I practice using an integrative approach, utilizing play therapy and expressive therapies, Theraplay® principles,Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), EMDR, and Internal Family Systems. I am also trained in the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP). I bring a strength-focused approach to my work with adolescents, adults, and their families. I also rely on humor and laughter to facilitate the healing process.

Finally, I believe in the importance of social justice and equality for all and bring this perspective to my therapeutic work with clients and in my pursuit of advanced training and consultation.

Coming to therapy can sometimes be hard or uncomfortable the first time. My therapeutic space provides a place for individuals to heal and grow, whether it is a result of a traumatic experience, worries, or other feelings that need exploration and resolution.

*I offer clinical supervision to psychologists seeking licensure in Virginia, as well as play therapists working to become Registered Play Therapists. Please contact me for more information.
